About the Talk:
Syed Nazakat heads DataLEADS, one of the world’s biggest fact-checking and information literacy initiatives. He will speak on their work in the media literacy field, specifically how DataLEADS started and developed through their partnership with Google News Initiative. Their work with governments will be illustrated through case studies of partnerships with WHO, Bihar, Karnataka, and Kerala governments.
About the Speaker:
Syed Nazakat is an award-winning Indian journalist, media entrepreneur, founder of DataLEADS, a data-driven Indian organisation aimed to create new platforms of storytelling and research. He leads DataLEADS in New Delhi, as well as overseeing its outreach across Asia with different partners including Google. He has worked in senior positions at different media organisations and has over 18 years of experience as a journalist, researcher, and media educator. He is the recipient of several national and international journalism awards including India’s prestigious Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Award, Karmaveer Puraskaar National Award and Christiane Amanpour Award, and British Medical Journal award for promoting transparency and integrity in Healthcare. He holds a B.Sc degree from India and a Master’s degree in Journalism from the Ateneo de Manila University, Philippines.
